Come work with us.

Help us build the fastest way for teams to communicate on the move.

We've invested in our ability to move fast, feel connected, and have fun while working from home. Our team is mostly located in the Bay Area, but we are excited to work remotely with candidates across North America. Hardline is backed by top VCs behind companies like Intercom, Pilot, Sonos and Slack.

Hardline is the fastest way for teams to communicate on the move. Our mobile app and simple hardware attachment turn any smartphone into a powerful walkie-talkie. Think Nextel 2.0 (check out this commercial from 2004 for inspiration). No more clunky radios or missed calls—just push a button and get things done.

Using voice, we're enabling workers to collect field data and complete tasks without ever having to stop and interact with a screen. On Hardline, conversations generate the most accurate, real-time data layer of the built world.

Hardware Engineer

Full-time, US Remote

We’re currently a team of 4 people, searching for our next partner on this journey. Are you looking for an exciting career at an early stage startup? At Hardline you’ll have the autonomy to design great hardware. We need your creativity and expertise to drive an awe-inspiring user experience.

Do you prefer to wear many hats? Since EE work comes in waves, we need someone with a lot of flexibility. You’ll pair program with the CTO on firmware. You’ll help make product decisions. You’ll teach software engineers about power constraints and battery life. You’ll weigh in on marketing language for the website. And so much more.

Are you thinking of leaving a corporate giant to have more impact? Don’t worry; we’re here to stay. Hardline is backed by top venture capital firms behind companies like Intercom, Pilot, Sonos and Slack. We’ve been refining product market fit for a year now and have executed pilots with several multi-billion dollar general contractors. We know our target industry. Come get in on the ground floor!

What will you do?

  • You will be in charge of electrical design, including:
  • Schematic capture for all changes to current hardware and new products based on business and user experience requirements
  • Find and read hardware component data sheets to inform the best designs
  • Board layout in Eagle or other electronic design automation (EDA) software for manufacturing and assembly by partners
  • Create and refine bills of materials (BoMs), evaluating alternative part numbers on functionality and price, presenting options to the team for discussion when appropriate
  • Hand solder small numbers of prototypes to enable rapid iteration
  • Hardware debugging and failure analysis
  • Create and execute hardware validation plans
  • Manage relationships and projects with contract manufacturers, ensuring rapid troubleshooting to avoid delays in production timelines
  • Collaborate with industrial designers on enclosures
  • Write high quality firmware that will be maintainable long term by a growing team

Requirements

  • At least 2 years of experience designing PCBs for production use that have been manufactured at scale (at least 100) and delivered to customers
  • At least 2 years of experience writing microcontroller firmware in C or C++
  • Fluency with Eagle or other EDA software packages
  • Outstanding written and spoken communication skills

Nice to haves

None of the following skills are required, but they might make you a stronger candidate. For this role in particular, since PCB design work comes in waves, we’re looking for a flexible and creative colleague who can bring unexpected perspectives and expertise for those times when there’s no EE work on deck.

  • Experience writing firmware for BLE products
  • Familiarity with the Bluetooth specification
  • Ability to design and create test jigs
  • Experience designing wireless circuits and optimizing RF performance
  • Experience with 3D printing and modeling software
  • Relationships with manufacturing partners
  • Experience writing technical documentation
  • QA and acceptance testing experience

Benefits

We're looking for thoughtful people to join us as a co-owner on this journey. We pay market salaries and grant significant equity. In addition, Hardline provides:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance, for you and your dependents
  • Generous and flexible vacation/PTO in full understanding of the crazy implications of that during a pandemic, especially for those of us raising kids while working from home
  • Great equipment to make sure you’re as productive as you can be

We value the strength of our bond as a team and have invested in our ability to move fast, feel connected, and have fun while working from home. Our team is mostly located in the San Francisco Bay Area, but we are excited to work remotely with candidates across the USA.

Everyone is welcome at Hardline. We are an equal opportunity employer who values diversity and inclusion, and we look for applicants who understand, embrace and thrive in a multicultural world. We’re trying to be the change we want to see in the world.

Especially in this pivotal year of anti-rascist transformation across America, we can not emphasize strongly enough that you—whoever you are, every part of you—will be welcome and respected at work here with us. We come to work as whole people. You should too.

And of course we’re still learning. The work never ends, whether it’s on our product or on systems of oppression. So, please call us out. Remind us to check our privilege. This is how we care for each other and future generations. This is how we build a company we will be proud of, that has a positive impact on the world.
